A.W Faber, later Faber-Castell, was a German manufacturer of slide rules, starting in 1892, that began as A.W. Faber pencil factory as early as 1761. They are celebrating their 250th anniversary as of 2011. Slide rules started out as boxwood, with celluloid facings added in 1897. English manuals were translated by C.N. Pickworth for American distributor in Newark, New Jersey, USA. In 1905, the name was changed to Faber-Castell. Celluloid laminated mahogany was used from 1902 to 1912, followed by celluloid faced Pearwood. In 1952 all-plastic (Geroplast) versions were introduced. The duplex slide rules began in 1961. The most complex slide rule was the multi-colored Novo Duplex 2/83N. When electronic calculators first appeared, they tried manufacuring a hybrid slide rule with a four function calculator on the back side (the TR-1). When the TR-3 came out with scientific functions and the users stopped using the slide rule side, and the slide rule factories were shut down. The TR-4 was purely just a calculator in a slide rule shape. Faber-Castell still has factories in Germany and distribution houses in over most of the world.

Peter Holland has made an update of his extensive catalog of Faber-Castell Slide rules. It is very informative and can be used for identifying dates It's an 8MB PDF file.

This was supplied with the slide rule so the user could loosen the cursor screws to calibrate the hairlines on the top and side and adjust the tension on the slide. These were easily lost because of their small size, and the first one acquired by ISRM.

Original Owner: Dr. Lee J. W. Levent, Hell Gate Power Station, (Marked on Back of stock) in South Bronx, New York.
Archive Scan with cursor (green background) Jorge Fabregas collection, Spain - reglasdecalculo.com
Historical Note: The Hell Gate Power Station, where this slide rule was used, was built in Bronx, New York in 1921, by Thomas E. Murray (1860-1929) of the United Electric Light & Power Company and later operated by Consolodated Edison. It was closed in 1973. It assumed the owner of the above slide rule, Dr. Lee J. W. Levent, was one of the many engineers on the project. The title Dr., in this case, being a Ph.D in electrical engineering. Thomas E. Murray was responsible for the design and construction of nine power stations in New York City, most of which continued to operate well into the second half of the 20th century.Murray built three stations in the city during the 1920s, each among the largest ever constructed anywhere. The first, Hell Gate, was undertaken by United to supplement Sherman Creek and supply the northern suburbs and Queens. Named for the mariner's term for the treacherous currents where the East River meets Long Island Sound, Hell Gate opened in November 1921. Planned for a capacity of 280 MW, so rapid was the advance in component design that it was actually rated at 605 MW to make it the world's most powerful steam electric station upon installation of the last unit in 1928. Hell Gate introduced Murray's most significant nonelectrical innovation for power stations: the water-cooled steel furnace wall to replace the fire brick refractory furnace wall used previously. The steel wall was comparatively thin, which afforded a substantial increase in furnace capacity and a major reduction in maintenance expense. This Murray innovation became the industry standard after the successful test at Hell Gate.

Plastic clamshell storage case
Phil used this model of slide rule for one year at high school before calculators came in. He then spent 18 years working as a telephone linesman and later 18 years assembling and testing 11,000 volt circuit breakers. In his career he never needed to use a slide rule, but recently has begun enjoying relearning slide rules and logarithms. Phil is a contributor and donor of slide rules to ISRM. He is always on the hunt in New Zealand to find items to add to the ISRM galleries.

Donated by Henry (Hank) Benoit, Kingston, Ontario, Canada

Henry Benoit (BSEE 1968, MSc 1970) had a hands-on biomedical engineering career in OB/GYN research at University of Toronto and clinical engineering at University of Ottawa Heart Institute. His graduate work focussed on electroanesthesia and electrosleep. During the 70s he applied an early Fairchild charge-coupled device to observation of internal organs and designed portable instrumentation based on the RCA COSMAC computer chip set and the FORTH language. Later he contributed to excimer laser applications in cardiac ablation surgery and integration of electronic technologies into clinical settings.
Hanks comment on this apparatus: "The 989 is a beautiful piece (to an engineer). My wife never saw it in that light. It was purchased for coursework in electromagnetic fields. It offered the contiuously-variable feature inherent in analog devices. Once the coursework was done I no longer found applications and electronic gadgets began to provide convenient complex functions anyway." See Hank's other personal slide rules, the Aristo 0970 Multilog and 870 (pocket) Multilog in the Aristo Gallery.
